Everything We Ask Before We Draw the First Line
Every year, organizations come to us asking a version of the same question: “We want to build a studio. Where do we start?” Sometimes it’s a corporate communications team. Sometimes a university. Sometimes a television station replacing a set that’s aged out of its usefulness. The organizations are different every time. The questions we ask them are almost always the same — because after decades of doing this, we’ve learned which questions actually determine whether a studio succeeds.
This manual walks through what we ask, in the order we ask it, before a single piece of furniture gets selected.
Start With Purpose, Not Furniture
Most people expect the first conversation to be about a news desk. It isn’t. It’s about how the room will actually be used — live broadcasts, corporate communications, investor relations, podcast production, hybrid events, university instruction, government communications. A studio built for a single anchor delivering scripted news needs a fundamentally different footprint than one built for a four-host podcast roundtable, or a hybrid space expected to convert between a formal interview set and a town-hall configuration inside an hour. Get this wrong at the start and every decision after it compounds the mistake.
The Four Measurements That Matter Most
Room dimensions are usually the fourth thing we measure, not the first. Before that, we’re documenting:
- Ceiling height — this determines what lighting grid and backdrop height are even possible, and it’s the constraint buyers underestimate most often
- Building access — door openings, hallways, freight elevators; one overlooked doorway can add weeks to a project or force a redesign of components that were otherwise ready to ship
- Camera positions and sightlines — how wide the set needs to read on camera
- Room dimensions and obstructions — width, depth, columns, HVAC returns
We’ve watched a single freight elevator (or the lack of one) change the way an entire set is manufactured. It’s rarely the room that surprises people. It’s what’s between the room and the loading dock.
Design for the Studio You’ll Need in Five Years, Not the One You Need Today
Organizations almost always start with one purpose in mind — executive communications, say at first— and then add podcasts, then webinars, then training video, then virtual events. The studio doesn’t change. The mission does. That’s why modular systems matter for reasons beyond installation speed: they allow the investment to adapt without requiring demolition whenever the communication strategy evolves. Planning for that flexibility up front is significantly cheaper than rebuilding for it later.
Modular vs. Custom Construction
Modular studio systems are built from reusable, factory-manufactured components, largely finished before they arrive on site. They install in days rather than months, relocate easily if the organization moves, expand without disrupting the surrounding facility, and cost less to own over time since individual panels can be replaced rather than the whole set rebuilt.
Custom-built construction offers the most design freedom — a genuinely one-of-a-kind set — but takes longer, costs more in labor, and is harder to modify once it exists.
The right answer depends on how likely the studio is to change. Organizations expecting to rebrand, relocate, or expand within three to five years are almost always better served by modular. Organizations building a permanent flagship set with no planned changes may reasonably choose custom.
Furniture Is One Layer, Not the Whole Studio
Buyers focus heavily on selecting a desk. In reality, furniture is one piece of a larger system that includes sightlines, lighting, acoustics, backgrounds, branding, camera movement, technology integration, and future maintenance. Every one of those decisions affects the others. The best studios function as complete environments, not a collection of separately chosen products.
We think about this as five interconnected layers:
- Workflow — how people actually use the space
- Technology — cameras, lighting, audio, monitors
- Physical environment — furniture, backgrounds, flooring
- Logistics — shipping, installation, maintenance
- Future growth — rebranding, expansion, new technology
No layer gets designed in isolation. A lighting decision made without considering the background material, or a furniture choice made without considering camera sightlines, tends to surface as a problem later — usually at the most expensive point to fix it.
Backgrounds: Choosing the Right Category
Backgrounds fall into a few categories, each suited to different budgets and production styles: scenic walls (dimensional, built environments), fabric graphics (lightweight, easy to swap), modular panels (reconfigurable for different shows), green screen cycloramas (seamless, for chroma key work), LED walls (dynamic, real-time graphics), and printed backdrops (the lowest-cost option).
Between green screen and LED wall specifically: green screen costs less upfront, needs carefully controlled chroma-key lighting, requires the least ongoing maintenance, and lets any virtual background swap instantly. LED walls cost substantially more, simplify lighting since the wall is its own light source, need ongoing pixel-pitch and processor upkeep, and let talent see and react to the background in real time.
Shipping Determines More Than Buyers Expect
A well-designed studio is only valuable if it actually reaches its destination intact. We’ve learned that freight logistics determine project success as often as manufacturing does. We ask: Does the building have a freight elevator? What’s the largest doorway? Can fully assembled furniture get inside? Are there loading dock restrictions? These questions rarely show up in studio planning guides. They influence nearly every project we run. One of the most common causes of installation delay isn’t production — it’s discovering too late that fully assembled furniture can’t navigate the building.
Acoustics and Lighting
Acoustic problems are far harder and more expensive to fix after a studio is built than before. While UNISET doesn’t specialize or offer these sorts of solutions, here are certain things to think about.
The major factors are echo from hard, parallel surfaces; HVAC noise bleeding into microphones; flooring material (hard surfaces reflect sound, carpet and specialty flooring absorb it); glass, which reflects both light and sound; and acoustic treatment. Lighting design has to account for ceiling height and grid load capacity, dedicated green-screen lighting where a chroma key wall is part of the set, and talent lighting — with even, shadow-free coverage across any green screen, since uneven lighting is the most common cause of poor keying.
The Questions Worth Asking Yourself, Not Your Vendor
Before finalizing a design: Can this studio evolve? Can it move? Can it be repaired? Can the graphics be replaced without replacing the set? Can technology change without replacing furniture? Can your own facilities staff maintain it?
What We’ve Learned
The best broadcast studios aren’t defined by how impressive they look on opening day. They’re defined by how well they keep serving an organization five, ten, or twenty years later. That’s the difference between purchasing furniture and building an environment — and it’s the question worth answering before the first line gets drawn.
